How do I bring more balance and stability to my life?

Have you ever asked yourself this question? Do you feel a little overwhelmed? Ok, do you feel a lot overwhelmed?😳

Me too sometimes
especially this time of year. In Chinese Medicine and Qigong, this time of year, called Late Summer can bring about feelings of worry, overwhelm and doubt. It is also the season of harvest where we gather up our stores for winter. Think about the garden and how the fruits and vegetables are ripening on the trees and vines getting ready to be picked to be enjoyed and put up for the winter. A similar process happens within our bodies as well.

Late Summer is associated with the Earth element. The Earth is where we essentially get all our nourishment from. It is where our home is. The Earth element, when balanced gives us our sense of security, balance, and stability. When the Earth element is out of balance we can be overcome by worry, doubt, and feeling overwhelmed.

Within our bodies, the element of Earth and the season of Late Summer govern our digestive system. It is how we take in not just physical substances that are nourishing, like food and drink, but mental and emotional energies as well.

Let’s talk a bit about the mental and emotional energies that you are taking in right now. How is your day structured? Are you waking up and immediately looking at your phone, checking your email, reading the news alerts, or looking at your schedule for the day? Are you surrounding yourself with people who drain your energy or add unnecessary drama to your life? (I personally can’t think of any drama that is necessary to my life)

Here’s a tough question for you
How is THAT working out for you?  Is that helping you to feel grounded? Is it helping you to feel more secure? Is it helping you to feel a sense of stability? I personally have never improved a problem in my life by adding worry to it.  There is no problem or difficulty that I have ever solved with worry.

Now, here comes the challenge.  Let’s try something different!  When you wake up in the morning, hit the snooze button for 5 minutes and just lay in bed on your back with your hands on your belly and take slow deep breathes filling up your abdomen.  Then when you alarm goes off again, see how you feel.  Scan your body and notice how your body feels.  Now, get out of bed and start your day.  When tension rises during the day, and it will because that’s this thing called life, check in with yourself. How do you feel? Then try that deep abdominal breathing again. Do it for 6-12 breathes. Check in with yourself.  How do you feel now?

Just give it a try for a few days and see if you notice a difference.  What do you have to lose except maybe a little bit of worry and tension.

If you would like to dive a little bit deeper with the experiment, let me tell you about Qigong for Late Summer.
